I'm interested in the concept of "hivemind" and the awareness of collective consciousness within the group. Hivemind occurs when a group, however large, finds themselves so caught up with like-mindedness and encouragement of the group, they fail to achieve alternative discourses. This is seen, mainly within the contexts of message boards and other internet groups. I will be creating a film describing this phenomenon.

I have been infiltrating particular internet group, such as reddit, 4chan and digg to further understand their specific groupthinks. I will also be (re)reading "Infotopia" by Cass R. Sunstein and "Madness and Civilization" by Foucault.

I think the idea of the hivemind quite obviously lends itself to the "weaving" and "liquidity" concepts. The Internet makes it quite simple for users to submit ideas to the group and have them adopted or rejected almost instantaneously. There is discussion, sure, but it does not take a democratic vote for the group to decide on a subject. Once the faction makes a decision, the rest of the group nods their heads. The information is everywhere, all at once. How? Why?

The film will be "experimental" in nature and lacking much of anything resembling a story. In this way, it will differ heavily from what I'm learning and working on in "film school"

I will base my success on the aesthetic pleasure I attain from the piece and how clearly the visuals express the idea I've previously stated.

The Hook-Nosed Ruler of Swamp Hell

Let the chemicals on Squire Mountain erode and decay. Hear sirens roar over the blue cracks illuminating foreign lands. I'm an iron hook in the kings mouth, rotting hell spans under and through malignant beef: golden and dripping light. Gas mask bubble in and de flates hanging off the side of his hanging mouth.
"Come here", saying harsh.
"Shut up and let me do this", slithery and sour.
Bones turn and grasp dick septer, huge ruby red boldness and salivate smile. Gelatin ankle sinks through straight surface and blinks. One quick swipe before vaginal walls collapse on the wine bottles.
The death of the hook-nosed ruler of Swamp Hell rings and reverberates in marrow and red curtains in front of yellow wooded floors.

This is a world wide generative art project led by Miranda July. (Filmmaker, performance artist, goddess) Every few months she puts up new "Assignments" to which people from all over send in their versions of the instructions. Sometimes the results can be mundane, sometimes their really interesting. They already have a book out of the stuff. Take a look, it's really cool.

TAKE THIS ONE TWO

I started off unsure.
I asked Kat to do really odd things that I made up spur of the moment. Then, while shopping with Brooke, I took a lot more video of food, lobsters and other patterns.
Then, while at Kinko's and borders I took many pictures of chests and more patterns. Also trees and the road.
Then i edited all together in quick succession. Then played it in class.

If you haven't noticed, I fucking loathe explaining the process. I like talking about art, but taking it step by step like this is just silly. It's like, here's the magic trick. here's how it's done. awful.

I'm trying to figure out a way to make this more bearable.
